The thrilling Group B encounter between Iran and Portugal ended in a 1-1 draw after a heroic display by Team Melli and Portugal sweated hard for the place in last 16 at Mordovia Arena, Saransk.
Portugal needing a point from the clash were dominant from the very start “go” and kept Iran battling at the back line. However, Iran settled gradually and forced Portuguese back to their own half with good build up.
However, with much struggles and fight Portugal managed to get the lead before the halftime when Ricardo Quaresma scored a brilliant goal from around 18-yard distance with his right foot after received from Adrein Silva.
Seven minutes down to second half Portugal was awarded the penalty after the VAR replays and Cristiano Ronaldo stepped in who missed the crucial penalty. Alireza Beiranvand judged it right and collects to keep his side alive in the game.
The pressure was and building on either side as Iran fighting hard for the equalizer and Portugal needing to keep the lead for the place in the knock out round.
The stoppage minute witnessed Sardar Azmoun handling the ball inside the box under a challenge from Cedric Soares. The VAR replays awards penalty for Iran to come back in the game.
Karim Ansarifard made no mistake to beat Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio from the spot kick. The goal made Iran livelier on the game however, the tie was not enough as Spain played 2-2 draw against Morocco in another clash of Group B for Team Melli to make a heroic exit, finishing third place in Group B.
