Russia through to the quarter-final after 4-3 tiebreaker win
Spain crashes out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic tiebreaker defeat, Akinfeev the hero...
Host Russia faced Spain in the fourth match of the Round of 16 and eliminated La Roha after a dramatic penalty shootout at Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.
The game ended at 1-1 scoreline in the regulation time and extra time could not fetch the result asking for the penalty shootout to find the winner where Russia secure 4-3 win a double save from goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev
As expected, Spain was dominant from the very start and found an early lead in the 12 minute through an own goal coming in from Sergei Ignashevich who became the oldest own goal scorer in World Cup history.
Yuri Zhirkov gave away a free kick when he fouled Nacho on the right and, when Aesnsio curled the cross in, Ignashevish tangled with Sergio Ramos at the far post and the ball flew in off the defender.
Russia equalized in the five minutes before the break when Dzubya leaped to win the ball on a corner kick and it hit Pique´s raised hand the referee pointed to the spot and consulted VAR replays and booked the defender.
Spain has continued their domination and kept ball possession throughout the second half too, but could not break in. The match had to be moved to extra time.
Akinfeev dived to save a Rodrigo shot in the one added minute at the end of extra time to huge cheers from the crowd as the game went to penalties.
Koke´s penalty was saved by Akinfeev and Golovin stepped up to smash home and give the hosts the advantage, but Ramos kept Spain in it before Cheryshev put the hosts on the brink of victory -- and then Akinfeev saved Aspas´ effort with his foot to send them through.
