2018 FIFA World Cup: Brazil confirms a place in last eight after 2-0 win over Mexico
Two second-half goal from Neymar and Roberto Firmino secured Canarinho´s quarterfinal berth in Russia...
Brazil edge past Mexico 2-0 in the Round of 16 clash on Monday evening after Neymar and Roberto Firmino strike in the second half of the match at Samara Arena.
Mexico looked promising in the first quarter of the match and threated Brazil defense with Carlos Vela and Hirving Lozano combining at the front.
Brazil took time to pick the momentum and first real chance in the 25th minute when Neymar´s close-range shot was kept out by Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa who was phenomenal today in between the stick.
Mexican managed to hold Canarinho´s boys to goalless at the end of first half.
Brazil took the field in the second half with more confidence and Neymar broke the deadlock in the six-minute with an out-stretched finish at the far post following a low cross from Willian.
Willian was denied by phenomenal Ochoa in the 63rd minute when Chelsea FC midfielder´s powerful shot was tipped over by Mexican custodian.
The pace of the game slowed down as Brazilian was now settling down to defensive mode and Mexico looked drained out looking for a goal to come back in the game.
Roberto Firmino sealed the deal for Canarinho´s two minutes before the end of regulation time who scored from Neymar shot with a sliding touch.
El Tri had no hope coming however tried to take advantage of the Brazilian defensive tactics towards the end. The win hands Brazil the quarterfinal berth in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
