India International Nirmal Chettri from Sikkim has revealed his plans to establish a football club at his hometown, Melli. Being a strong promoter and an icon of the sport in the region revealed his intentions to promote local talents around Melli.
With an aim to create a platform and educate young football talents about the tough environment in professional football, the new club will be named as FC Melli.
"The plan to launch the club was in June, but since the ground is under construction we might have to delay it a bit," said Chettri who is currently playing for I-league club DSK Shivajains and is based in Pune.
He further added,"We do not have any big plans at the moment but would like to take it forward step by step.
Former NorthEast United FC defender also talked about his plans to share his experience both club and international with the young talents and be there as a mentor for the club.
"At the end of the day it is the support from the people and the fans that help the club to achieve success, the club will be for the people and will try to involve as many people as possible directly or indirectly and I hope people will support me." He said.
FC Melli will be starting from the lowest divisions targeting MLA Challenge Cup which will be held in Melli this year and will also try to register themselves in the Sikkim League.
"I am in touch with a lot of footballers there and have almost decided as to what type of players I will take into the club, I am also ready to accept talents from Darjeeling and Kalimpong with open arms," said Nirmal.
