The ninth round encounter of the 2017-18 Hero I-league saw home side Mohun Bagan receiving the 2-0 defeat against North India powerhouse Minerva Punjab FC at Yuba Bharti Krirangan(Salt Lake Stadium) on Wednesday evening.
The visitors were aggressive from the very word go and earned the free kick in the opening minute after Chencho was fouled by Kinshuk at the left wing. Mohun Bagan responded well and earned the consecutive corner in the following minutes.
Nevertheless, it was visitors who found the target first in the 23rd minute through Bhutanese Chencho Gyeltshen whose powerful shot got the deflection to beat Shibinraj Kunniyil in his position.
Chencho Gyeltshen found the second goal of the match in the 31st minute after Asiedu´s through-ball was could not be cleared by Bagan back line and Chencho raced in to take the final shot on target and gave Minerva Punjab the 2-0 lead.
Four Minute later Mohun Bagan had the golden opportunity to reduce the margin when Dipanda was brought down inside the box by Minerva goalkeeper Rakshit Dagar conceding the penalty. However, Ansumana Kromah failed to beat Dagar.
At the break, Punjab side was comfortably cushioned with the 2-0 lead.
The second half was no difference either as Minerva Punjab enjoyed the majority of ball possession while Mohun Bagan kept searching for the goal clueless. Kromah and Dipanda combo tried their level best to find the target but Minerva custodian Rakshit Dagar stayed tough at his position the frustrate home side with each passing minute.
Eze Kingsley finally pulled one for The Mariners in the injury minute but it was too less to little for the home side to bounce back.
With the win, Minerva Punjab climbs up to the summit of the league with 19 points from 8 games.
