GANGTOK, 26 April: Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club has also entered into the semi-final round of the ongoing 2nd Mahendra Karki Memorial Invitational Football Tournament 2018 here at Paljor Stadium.
United Sikkim FC started off well taking an early lead through Lhendup Bhutia who scored in the 6th minute and his teammate Tshering Zangpo extended the lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute. Sikkim Himalayan SC players played their hearts out but were unable to score any goal in the first half.
Soon in the second half, Pelsang Lama further extended the lead of United Sikkim FC to 3-0 in the 48th minute. Nikesh Gurung added another one for Sikkim Himalayan SC in the 69th minute of the match. It almost looked like the match was going in favor of USFC when Suraj Subba scored the equalizer for Sikkim Himalayan SC in the dying seconds of injury time.
In the tie-breaker through a penalty shoot-out, Sikkim Himalayan SC players converted all four shots while United Sikkim FC players managed to score just 3 goals. With this win, Sikkim Himalayan SC became the last team to secure its berth in the semi-final round of the tournament. Sikkim Himalayan SC will take on United Brothers, Kalimpong in the second semi-final on 28th April.
Nikesh Gurung of Sikkim Himalayan SC was adjudged as the man of the match.
The first semi-final of the tournament will be played between Sikkim Police and Apex Football Club, Kalimpong on Friday at 2 PM.
In a contesting last quarter-final match played today, Sikkim Himalayan FC defeated Sikkim United Football Club in a tie-breaker.
