2018 FIFA World Cup: Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia
The football extravaganza kicked off today in Russia and in the opening match host Russia took on Saudi Arabia in the Group A clash at Olimpiyskiy stadion Luzhniki wherein host Russia secured a comfortable 5-0 victory.
Yuri Gazinskiy scored the opener in 12 minutes followed by Substitute magic with Denis Cheryshev scoring in the (42 ´ and 90+1´) minutes and Artem Dzyuba adding another one in the (72 ´) minutes for Russia while Aleksandr Golovin (90+3) sealed it with a brilliant free kick.
After a scrappy start, Russia took the lead in the 12 minute through Yuri Gazinskiy who was fitted a perfect ball by Aleksandr Golovin from outside the box and unmarked Gazinskiy made no mistake to head the ball in.
The tempo of the game went up after the goal and the hosts gathered more confident, exerting pressure on Saudi Arabia.
Saudi looking for the goal earned consecutive two corners as they build up their move from the left flank in the 17th minute. Russia was forced to bring in substitute as Alan Dzagoev received a hamstring injury.
Substitute Denis Cheryshev doubled the lead couple of minute before the end of first half. Cheryshev received a long ball and managed to keep composure under pressure from two Saudi defenders and took a neat left footer to land the ball inside the net.
Second half saw Saudi Arabia pressing for the comeback and came close in the 56th minute when the right side cross saw Al Sahlawi stretching for the touch but failed to make it. And as the game progress, they lost their composer.
Substitute Artem Dzyuba made Saudi come comeback impossible as Dzyuba calmly headed Aleksandr Golovin´s cross into the net to hand hosts a 3-0 lead in the 72nd minute.
Saudi Arabia though enjoyed ball possession in the second half but Russia kept threatening whenever they had the ball. Denis Cheryshev scored a brilliant goal in the injury minute to take Russian lead even further.
Aleksandr Golovin sealed the deal with his curling free kick in the dying seconds. This is one of the biggest opening days win the FIFA World Cup.
