The third quarterfinal match of the first edition of the Independence Gold Cup-Salugara Kanchanjunga FC bounced back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory over Assamese club Gobinda Basumatary FC on Wednesday evening at Joydhar School Ground.
Gobinda Basumatary FC made a brilliant start of the game as they secured the lead in the 11th minute of the game through Gwnwthao Mushahary who picked up Chin Edu Gneue´s right-wing cross to slot the ball in.
Kanchanchanga fought back well in search of the equalizer but failed to find the ball on target. Assamese side had a couple of good chance to double the lead failed to convert any and headed into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Siliguri Rhinos looked more organized in the second half and determined to come back in the game. Ten minutes down to second session Jeet Tamang took a brilliant free kick to bring in the parity in the game.
It was no looking back for Kanchanjunga FC as they made a flurry of attack on Gobinda Basumatary FC. Khokan Roy missed the opportunity twice in quick succession on Buddha Chenjung cross.
Five minutes before the full-time Kanchanjunga FC´s Khokan Roy was brought done inside the box and the referee pointed towards the spot kick for the penalty. Jeet Tamang stepped in and made no mistake to bear goalkeeper Dipunjoy Rabha and give the lead to his team,
As the time ticking away o Gobinda Basumatary FC fought back for the equalizer but could not move Siliguri Rhinos.
