In our endeavour to bring in the story of players who made the region proud with their skill and talent but got lost somewhere in this fast pace generation. One such personality is Deobrata Pradhan- the dynamic defender who played for Darjeeling Dynamo Football Club till late 80´s

Mr Deobrata (Sahuji) Pradhan, born on 16th March 1959 from Chandmari Darjeeling was a football player of prominence in the early 80´s and into the early 90´s.
He says he started playing at the age of seven and never looked back from then. He played as a left fullback and loved his position.
When he was a student at St Roberts School as early as 1972 he would go for his training to NP Ground and his enthusiasm was high because he had just registered at the Darjeeling Dynamo Club and was training with the stalwart Mr Chandan Sigh Rawat.
He still remembers how he used to run all the way back from Singamari and get changed and quickly run off to School after a hurried breakfast. He would reach the School gate just at the nick of time 09:20 am five minutes before the School bell rang!
It was no easy road as he had to wake up at 05:00 Am and reach the field by 06:00 AM in the morning. He jogged all the way to the NP Ground where Mr Chandan Singh would be already waiting.
Chandan Singh Sir was a strict trainer and disciplinarian if one was not dressed in the proper kit he would ask them to stay out or get their proper kit to join in the training. It so happened that one of the trainees once forgot to get his shorts and ran all the way back to Mariam Cottage and to the field again.
He says that in those years when he was playing equipment and kits were difficult to come by. there was a scarcity of proper balls and football boots. The only boots that were easily available were the "Katidas" as it was called then. It was leather top and the leather soled pair of football boots handmade with studs carved out of leather and nailed on to the sole. The studds would often drop off and one had to go to a cobbler to get a new stud fixed.
He started his playing days with the Dhobi Talau Shield which was played at the Government High School Ground during the puja season n the year 1969. He soon graduated to the Darjeeling League representing Darjeeling Dynamos in 1976 and started playing the prestigious Herihly Cup, Jasodha Giri Shield, Malla Shield and represented Darjeeling in the Brigade of Gorkhas Gold cup, Radha Ballav Shield in Kurseong, The Independence Cup and The Gold Cup in Kalimpong.

He represented his School St Roberts High School (Runners Up 3rd div Leauge 1974), Darjeeling XI (1978 - 1985), joined Junior Bengal Camp (1979), North Bengal University (1979/1980), played for Bhutan XI (1982), and has played the ANFA Cup against Nepal and China.
Deobrata´s favorite local players are Mr. Benu Subba, Mr. Abhay Gurung, Mr Krish Dewan, and Mr Anil Pradhan, Mr Serman Dewan, Mr Bikram Pakhrin and Mr Tulsi Rai.
Amongst the National Gorkha players, his favourites are Shyam Thapa, Narendra Gurung, Motilal Pradhan, Ranjeet Thapa, Nirmal Chettri, Sunil Chettri, Sanju Pradhan, Jairu
Amongst the International Players, his favourites are Pele, Gordon Banks, Geroge Best, Yohan Cryuff
Having played many tournaments and represented his club Dynamo and Darjeeling XI he misses the days of his football and especially when he passes through the NP ground he gets nostalgic.
He remembers the day when the Darjeeling XI team beat Tollygunj Agragami in 1982 in the Brigade of Gorkhas Gold Cup and for the very first time in the history of Darjeeling football and the Cup the local team had moved into the second round.
He says that Trophies and Fame and the passion for the game were what gave him the will and encouragement to play and do well. He last played in an inter-School tournament but was a small field tournament. He played in Namchi Sikkim at the Veterans Tournament last and is probably the last proper tournament he played. His love for the game has not dwindled though and still visits his favourite field sometimes.
His message to the youngsters he says is to be disciplined, work hard, stay dedicated and then only one can get fit to play and stay away from injuries. He believes that the younger generation has more potential due to the advantage of equipment and kits and should work towards the glory of Darjeeling football. He would like to see some good players come to represent Darjeeling and India in the near future.
