Indian Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu creates history by becoming the first Indian to start for a top division European Club.

23 year old Sandhu moved to Norwegian Club Stabaek back in August 2014 from East Bengal. He had made his Debute for Stabaek back in 18th January, 2015.

Gurpreet is the fifth Indian player to play professionally in Europe after Mohammed Salim, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri and Subrata Pal. Bhaichung Bhutia played in the first division for Bury FC while Chhetri and Pal could only make it to the Sporting Lisbon and FC Vestsjaelland reserves. Before Sandhu, Salim was the only Indian footballer who had earned the recognition of having represented a top-division club.

The 22 year old had stated earlier, “It’s better late than never. I am glad that the club showed faith in me and thought I was ready to make my first team debut. I will try to make the most of the opportunity while Sayouba is away and hope to play for the first team on a regular basis.”

Sandhu who now is the first Indian to have started for a top Division European club as stated, "I couldn't ask for more".

Gurpreet further added, “I didn't want to concede on this occasion and I thank my teammates for performing their best and helping me. I want to make most of such chances to prove that I'm good enough to start regularly in league games.”
