FIFA´s council has approved working with hosts Qatar to explore expanding the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams by adding at least one more country in the Gulf to host football matches.
However, a decision on whether to increase the size of the 2022 World Cup from 32 to 48 teams will be made in June, the head of football´s world governing body FIFA has said.
FIFA President, Gianni Infantino said “We have shown the council the feasibility study in which we conclude: yes, it is possible to expand the 2022 World Cup – provided that some conditions are met”.
Expanding the field to 48 teams would create three additional berths for Europe, an extra four each for Africa and Asia, three more spots for North and Central America, and for the first time, Oceania would get a guaranteed slot.
This means India might stand a chance to play in the FIFA World Cup 2022. India currently sits at the 14th place in the AFC ranking, with overall FIFA ranking of 97, and total of 47 AFC teams will take part in the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup. After the new format announced by the FIFA officials it looks likely that we might see India playing in the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever.
It´s high time for AIFF to look for the next head coach for the national team and organise friendly matches against some quality sides. FIFA international friendly window is open from the 19th March and all throughout the 27th. That means that the Blue Tigers could look forward to playing at least two matches in this duration.
