Legendary footballer Pem Dorjee was born at Ben in South Sikkim to Mr. and Mrs.Gyampu T.Chingapa on 12th July 1958. He did his formal schooling from Scottish University Mission Institute (SUMI) in Kalimpong and Pelling Senior Secondary in West Sikkim.
Dorjee had a distinction of becoming the first Sikkimese to captain the Indian national football team in the Pre-Olympic tournament held in 1982 in Malaysia. He was part of the first Sikkimese football team at National Champion Ship 1976.
Pem Dorji was among the first few players from the hills who had the chance to play at club football at Macca of Football Calcutta when he played for Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1980. He later went to play for clubs like Mahendra Club (Kathmandu), Kaliks Sporting team and Shree Paanch Mahendra Police Club.
Dorjee represented India in the Nehru Gold Cup in the year 1983, 1984-85 and 1988 and in The President Cup at Dhaka Bangladesh in 1983-84 and 1987.
He also represented Indian in Chinese Great Wall Cup in 1984, the Asia Cup at Abu Dhabi in 1984 and SAF in 1987. On numerous occasions, he was part of Sikkim team ranked higher in the national stage.
It is known he was more inclined to volleyball during his school and football came to him later in life. Dorjee married Pushpa a beautiful girl from Gyanshing in 1987 and had two children Jenila and Marco Bhutia. Dorjee died at an early age of 42 due to cancer as known to us.
